Mega Eye Surgery Camp by AL-REZA HC & RF Concludes Successfully

Kargil, 29-06-2024 : The Mega Eye Surgery Camp organized by AL-REZA Health Care & Research Foundation in collaboration with ASG Hospital Srinagar and the Department of Health Kargil has concluded successfully. Over the course of the camp, a total of 750 patients received examinations, with 250 patients attended to at a one-day camp in Sankoo on June 26, 2024.

During the camp held from June 27 to 28, 2024, 52 cataract surgeries were performed free of cost, with all lenses donated by ASG Hospital Srinagar. Dr. Manzoor Ul Mehdi, a renowned ophthalmologist and AIIMS alumnus, led the surgical team along with Dr. Mujahid Ali from ASG Hospital. They used micro-incisional phacoemulsification with posterior chamber foldable IOL implantation under topical anesthesia. Dr. Asiya Noor, Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at District Hospital Kargil, also played a key role in the surgeries. The camp’s success was further ensured by the dedicated support of ophthalmology assistants from District Hospital Kargil.

 


In addition to cataract surgeries, the camp featured one case of pterygium excision with conjunctival autografting and two cases of YAG laser capsulotomy for posterior capsular opacification, all performed under topical anesthesia.

Preliminary examinations of over 550 patients took place on June 18 and 19, 2024, at Old Hospital Kargil. Cataract patients were identified during these sessions and scheduled for surgery.


The Mega Eye Surgical Camp was inaugurated on June 26, 2024, at Old District Hospital by Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) Dr. Mohd Jaffar Akhone, with Deputy Commissioner Srikant Balasahib Suse as the Guest of Honour and President Jamait Ul Ulema Isna Ashriya Kargil Sheikh Nazir Ul Mehdi Mohammadi in attendance. The camp concluded on June 28, 2024.

Dr. Manzoor Ul Mehdi, addressing the media, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Kargil and confirmed that all 55 patients operated on were examined on the first and second postoperative days, with all reported to be doing well. He emphasized the importance of reducing screen time to prevent allergic eye diseases prevalent in the region.

Dr. Mohd Abass, President of AL-REZA HC & RF, extended his thanks to the CEC, LAHDC Kargil, Deputy Commissioner Kargil, and the Kargil administration for their unwavering support. He reiterated the foundation’s commitment to providing free eye care to economically disadvantaged and elderly individuals in remote areas of Kargil. He also highlighted a recently concluded Mega Minimally Invasive Surgery Camp organized by AL-REZA, during which 12 major surgeries were successfully conducted at District Hospital Kargil.

This initiative by AL-REZA Health Care and Research Foundation marks a significant step in providing essential healthcare services to underserved populations in Kargil, ensuring better eye health and improved quality of life for many.

Sheikh Nazir Mehdi Mohammadi, President of JUIAK, congratulated the doctors of ASG Hospital Srinagar for the successful completion of the camp and thanked the UT administration, CEC LAHDC Kargil, and Deputy Commissioner Kargil for equipping District Hospital Kargil with the latest equipment. He praised the paramedical staff, volunteers, and OT staff for their efforts and prayed for their future success.

The people of Kargil have expressed their gratitude to AL-REZA HC & RF, Dr. Manzoor Ul Mehdi, ASG Hospital, and the Kargil Administration for conducting this Mega Eye Screening and Surgery Camp, which greatly benefited the needy patients in the region.
