Awareness program on mental health and tobacco control held at GDC Zanskar

Kargil, July 12, 2025: Health Department Kargil in collaboration with GMDC Kargil conducted a one-day awareness program on “Mental Health and Tobacco Control” at GDC Zanskar.

Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Kargil, Er. Phunchok Tashi, was the chief guest. Director Metrology Department, Ladakh, Sonam Lotus, was the special guest, and SDM Zanskar, Romil Sing Donk was present as the guest of honour.

The program commenced with a welcome speech by Dr. Abid Hussain, Assistant Professor Department of Zoology at GDC Zanskar. This was followed by a keynote address from Masood Ahmad, Consultant for the National Tobacco Program, who highlighted the various harms caused by smoking cigarettes and other intoxicating substances on people’s lives.

SDM Zanskar also spoke about the issues of drug abuse, alcoholism, and mobile addiction. He encouraged the students to play a crucial role in reducing addiction in Zanskar Subdivision.

The Ranthaq Theater Group, headed by Kacho Ahmad Khan, presented a play focused on raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco, drugs, and alcohol. The performance was well-received, and all participants applauded the group’s skills and efforts in conveying such an important message.

Dr. Murtaza Ali, Consultant Psychiatrist at District Hospital Kargil, presented a PowerPoint presentation highlighting various issues related to mental well-being and mental illness in an individual’s life.

Sonam Lotus, Director Metrology Ladakh, shared his opinion on mental health and drug addiction, recounting experiences from his past life.

Er. Phunchok Tashi applauded GDC Zanskar and Health Department Kargil for hosting such an important program in Zanskar. He emphasized the importance of education to students.

Dr. Fatima Nissa, Nodal Officer for Mental Health, expressed her gratitude to all the guests, dignitaries, faculty members, and students for successfully concluding the session.
