EC Tashi chairs meeting on stopping use of chemical fertilizer, promotion of cash crops in Zanskar
Kargil, July 24, 2024: Executive Councilor, RDD/PR, Cooperative, Forest, Wildlife, FCS&CA and Zanskar Development Authority, Er Punchok Tashi today chaired a meeting at Council Secretariat to stop use of chemical fertilizer in the district and promotion of cash crops in Zanskar. 
The meeting discussed the impact of chemical fertilizers on soil health and environment, proposal to stop the use of chemical fertilizers in Kargil and alternatives to chemical fertilizers. 
EC Tashi welcomed all attendees and outlined the purpose of the meeting particularly the impact of chemical fertilizers and the negative effects of chemical fertilizers on soil health, water quality and local biodiversity also highlighted the environmental concerns, including pollution and long-term sustainability issues.
The EC advised to stop chemical fertilizers and proposed a district-wide ban on chemical fertilizers, emphasizing the need for sustainable agricultural practices and as desired by Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Kargil while going on line with the direction of UT administration and it’s vision of declaring Organic Ladakh by 2025.
The proposal was supported by all the attendees, with a unanimous agreement on the necessity of the ban. Chairman/Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC Kargil has approved complete banning of chemical fertilizer in the district and desired to enhance the subsidy on compost fertilizer up to 90 percent till the farmers are acquainted with organic fertilizers.
DRC Kargil may appreciate action in the matter. Executive Councilor desired and invited inputs from Chief Agriculture Officer Kargil that Zanskar Sub Division be given focus for green pea and potato cultivation on commercial basis by infusing all technological intervention from Agriculture Department Kargil as there is ready market available for such crops in Lahoul Spiti District.
It was also proposed that a team of Agriculture Officers from Kargil and Zanskar shall undertake an exposure cum official visit to district HQ of Lahoul Spiti at Kaylong around 17th of August.
The meeting was attended by Ashique Hussain Basharat, Chief Agriculture Officer Kargil, Dr Zakir Hussain, DRC Kargil and Mohd Hussain HQA to CAO Kargil.
