Zanskar, October 7, 2026: Deputy Commissioner, Zanskar, Sh. Omkar Rajendra Gundage today chaired a meeting at the Conference Hall, Revenue Complex, Padum, to discuss measures for creating awareness and strengthening preventive measures against drug abuse and smoking in the district.
The meeting was attended by various district officers and concerned stakeholders. During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner emphasised the need for greater public awareness regarding the harmful effects of drug abuse and smoking, particularly among the youths and young childerns. He stressed the importance of coordinated efforts by the concerned departments to address the issue effectively.
The Deputy Commissioner also called for the formulation of comprehensive guidelines and the constitution of a dedicated committee to oversee and coordinate measures related to drug abuse prevention, awareness and monitoring in the district.
He further directed that regular inspections of medical shops in the market should be undertaken to check the sale and stocking of expired medicines and to ensure compliance with prescribed rules and regulations. The inspections would also focus on preventing the unauthorised sale of medicines that require a doctor’s prescription, thereby ensuring the safe and responsible dispensing of medicines.
During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner also sought suggestions and views from the participating officers on the issue and discussed possible measures that could be adopted at the district level to strengthen awareness, monitoring and enforcement.
The meeting concluded with emphasis on collective and coordinated action by all concerned departments to prevent substance abuse and promote a healthier and safer environment in Zanskar.
