Commemorative Trek and Veer Gatha Held at Battle Site of Point 4812 in Kargil
In Ladakh, a commemorative trek was recently organised to Point 4812—an iconic battle site from the 1999 Kargil War—situated at an altitude of approximately 16,500 feet. The event paid homage to the supreme sacrifices made by Indian soldiers, including Captain Keishing Clifford Nongrum, Maha Vir Chakra (Posthumous), who led a brave assault at this location.
Participants retraced the original route taken by assault teams during the war. A solemn Veer Gatha session was held at the site, featuring accounts of valour and leadership shared by war veterans, serving personnel, students, and civilians.
Subedar Yougendar Nimbu of the 11 Gorkha Rifles, a Kargil War veteran and the chief guest of the event, emotionally recounted moments of intense combat and the martyrdom of Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey. He also highlighted the sense of brotherhood, courage, and national duty that drove the soldiers to victory during the war. In his address, Subedar Nimbu urged the younger generation to take inspiration from the sacrifices made by the brave hearts and to uphold the ideals of patriotism and service to the nation. He expressed pride in witnessing such remembrance events being held at the actual battle site, which he called “a sacred ground of Indian valour.”
Colonel Sunil Koshal also graced the occasion and interacted with students and villagers, appreciating their participation in honouring the legacy of the Kargil heroes.
On this occasion, children from different schools presented colourful patriotic programmes, showcasing their respect for the armed forces through songs and dances. Later, the chief guest presented mementoes to war veterans and distributed gifts to the participating school children as a gesture of appreciation.
The event was attended by nominated Councillor Rigzin Gurmet, local elders, and residents from surrounding villages. Social activist Tashi Lundup remarked that the newly developed memorial and viewpoint at Point 4812 will not only keep alive the legacy of the Kargil heroes but also help promote tourism in the Aryan Valley region.
The initiative served as a tribute to the soldiers of 12 JAKLI and other regiments, reinforcing a collective resolve to remember their courage and sacrifice.
