The Department of Science and Technology (DST), University of Ladakh (UoL) in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK)-Kargil 1 organized a one-day workshop titled “Empowering Farmers through Modern Technologies and Skill Advancement for Entrepreneurship Development: Way Forward”.
The workshop aimed at promoting modern agricultural technologies and entrepreneurial skills to make farmers self-reliant and enhance sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
The workshop was graced by Chairman/Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC, Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, as the chief guest. Vice-Chancellor, University of Ladakh, Prof. S.K. Mehta, attended as the guest of honor, along with Dr. Mohd Hussain, Coordinator of DST Purse, and Dr. Nasreen, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK-Kargil.
In his address, CEC Dr. Jaffer congratulated the organizers for initiating a program aimed at the welfare of farmers and helping them achieve self-reliance. He emphasized the significance of agriculture, horticulture, and their allied sectors in driving sustainable growth in Kargil. Highlighting the need for area-specific agricultural advancements, he urged stakeholders to explore diverse opportunities in different regions.
Dr. Jaffer also extended his gratitude to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mehta for the introduction of the Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Agriculture at UoL. He further advocated for age relaxation in recruitment and the inclusion of Ladakh Resident Certificates (LRC) as mandatory in the process. The CEC also proposed the establishment of an agricultural campus at the UoL’s Kargil campus to further promote local agricultural development.
Prof. Mehta, in his speech, outlined the University’s initiatives to empower women in the region and its commitment to focusing on agriculture. He expressed his appreciation to the CEC for facilitating the transfer of land cases related to KVK.
Prof. Mehta also announced that two units of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) are now part of UoL, further strengthening the University’s focus on agricultural education and research.
The workshop included interactive sessions where participants discussed modern agricultural technologies and skill development programs aimed at boosting entrepreneurship among farmers in Kargil.
