Kargil Gears Up for Khelo India Push: DC Calls for Inclusive Tournaments, Grassroots Sports Boost

Kargil, April 09, 2026: A meeting was convened under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC, Kargil Sh Rakesh Kumar, IAS at NIC Hall, Kargil, to deliberate on the upcoming Khelo India initiative and other related activities.

The meeting was attended by Additional District Development Commissioner, Kargil, Ghulam Mohammad, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, Shabir Hussain, District Youth Services & Sports Officer, Kargil; District Social Welfare Officer, Kargil; and Incharge SAI Centre, Kargil.

During the meeting, detailed discussions were held regarding the planning, coordination, and effective implementation of the Khelo India programme in the district. Emphasis was laid on promoting sports activities at the grassroots level and ensuring active participation of youth across Kargil.

The Deputy Commissioner also directed that special tournaments be organized for specially-abled individuals to ensure inclusivity in sports activities. He emphasized that the ongoing tournaments at Biamathang Ground should not be disrupted. In this regard, the Youth Services & Sports Department was instructed to organize semi-final and final matches at Biamathang, while the remaining matches may be conducted at alternate venues such as Sharjah and Kaksar grounds and other available grounds. The Deputy Commissioner further advised utilizing school playgrounds wherever feasible to accommodate the events.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of organizing tournaments under the SPAN scheme, which promotes peace and harmony, and directed that women and girls be actively included in all such sporting activities. He also encouraged the organization of diverse sporting events and directed that games such as boxing, weight lifting, and other disciplines be included based on feasibility to ensure wider participation.

The chair stressed the importance of inter-departmental coordination to ensure the smooth execution of all proposed activities and directed the concerned officers to take necessary steps for timely implementation.
