Ladakh Releases New Bhoti Textbooks to Strengthen Mother-Tongue Education

Leh, December 5, 2025:

In a major step toward preserving Ladakh’s linguistic and cultural heritage, the School Education Department of UT Ladakh officially unveiled newly developed Bhoti language textbooks for Balvatika levels 1, 2, and 3, as well as Grade 1 and Grade 2. The launch event took place at Purple Studio, District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Leh.

The ceremony was attended by Ms. Bhanu Prabha (IAS), Administrative Secretary of the School Education Department, as the Chief Guest, along with Ms. Tashi Dolma (JKAS), Director of School Education, who served as the Guest of Honour. Both dignitaries presided over the release in the presence of Bhoti language experts, educators, and the faculty of DIET Leh.

The introduction of these textbooks marks a significant milestone in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes teaching young children in their mother tongue. The newly crafted books are designed to build a strong foundation in Bhoti language and script for early learners.

The scholarly team behind the project—led by Shri Maryul Stanzin Nurbo, principal designer of the textbooks—was applauded for their extensive effort. Their collaborative work, supported by DIET Leh’s faculty, was recognized as essential to the success of this initiative.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Bhanu Prabha praised the progress made so far and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to expanding Bhoti language resources. She called for a clear roadmap to develop Bhoti textbooks up to Class 12, urging the team to prioritize timelines for the next phases.

This release highlights UT Ladakh’s dedication to strengthening linguistic identity and ensuring high-quality educational materials in the Bhoti language. Officials noted that the initiative will play a crucial role in establishing a strong multilingual education system across the region.
