Leh, December 9:
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, emphasized the pivotal role of financial institutions in accelerating holistic and sustainable development across the region, particularly in remote and high-altitude areas like Ladakh. He noted that banks play a vital role as catalysts of socio-economic change, fostering entrepreneurship, expanding aspirations, and enabling long-term community empowerment.
“Expanding banking services forms the bedrock of true empowerment, enabling economic self-reliance and inclusive growth,” the Lt Governor stated.
Launch of Major Rural Development Initiatives
Shri Kavinder Gupta was speaking at the launch of two major projects:
Focused Rural Development Project Holistic Rural Development Project
Both initiatives are supported by HDFC Bank Parivartan and implemented by Himmotthan Society, covering 35 revenue villages across Changthang, Nimoo, and several border regions of Ladakh.
Three-Year Programme to Support 3,000 Families
The newly launched three-year programme aims to enhance the quality of life for nearly 3,000 families by promoting sustainable and climate-resilient development.
Key interventions include:
Strengthening Village Development Committees Establishing solar greenhouses and artificial glaciers Renovating irrigation canals and water reservoirs Setting up automated weather stations Installing solar photovoltaic systems and streetlights Developing smart schools Organising community health camps and medical outreach services
These initiatives are designed to build resilience, improve accessibility to essential services, and support long-term community welfare.
CSR Outreach Expected to Benefit Over 2,500 Households
Commending HDFC Bank’s CSR outreach in Changthang and Sham Valley, the Lt Governor highlighted the significant potential of these interventions to positively impact over 2,500 households.
He noted that targeted support in:
Livelihood enhancement Agriculture and water security Renewable energy Health and education
…will particularly benefit nomadic communities and small farmers, strengthening their ability to thrive amid climate-related challenges.
“These initiatives will drive meaningful transformation and enhance resilience across Ladakh’s rural communities,” he emphasised.
Focus on Community Participation
The Lt Governor reiterated that the success of these development programmes hinges on strong community participation and local ownership. He reaffirmed the UT administration’s full support for community-centric projects that empower villages and improve rural livelihoods.
