Leh, September 26: A three-day traditional archery tournament, organised as part of the Ladakh Festival 2026, began at the Shenam Gongma Ground here on Saturday, bringing together selected archers from all seven districts of Ladakh.
The tournament was inaugurated by Bhanu Prabha, IAS, Administrative Secretary, Youth Services and Sports, UT Ladakh, and Tashi Dolma, JKAS, Director, Tourism & Culture, UT Ladakh, in the presence of Sanjit Rodrigues, IAS, Administrative Secretary, Tourism & Culture, and Mohd Taqi, JKAS, Deputy Director, Tourism & Culture.
The dignitaries lit the traditional lamp to mark the opening of the event and also participated in an introductory archery session.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by Muhammad Ali Tak, Assistant Director, Tourism Department, Kargil; Tsering Tashi, DYSSO, Leh; Abid Ali, DYSSO, Kargil; and Lobzang Thokthok, President, Traditional Archery Association, along with association members. National cyclist Lakzess Angmo, tourists and local residents were also present.
The tournament marks a new format this year, with teams representing all seven districts of Ladakh competing against each other. A total of 14 selected archers, two from each district, are participating in the competition, replacing the earlier format in which local societies competed against one another.
The matches are currently underway, with the top three winners scheduled to be announced on September 27. Trophies and cash prizes will be presented to the winners on September 28.
