Animal Husbandry Department, Leh Conducts Week-Long Veterinary Training in Collaboration with WVS Task-force

LEH, LADAKH — 28 September 2026 — The Animal Husbandry Department, Leh, in collaboration with World Veterinary Services (WVS) Taskforce, conducted a week-long training programme for departmental veterinary personnel from 21 September to 26 September 2026. The programme was held at the ABC Clinic, Changspa.

The training focused on strengthening field capacity in small-animal clinical work. Four veterinarians of the department received hands-on instruction in surgical skills. Two paravets were trained in veterinary assistant skills. Three veterinarians of the department also took part as volunteers, supporting the practical sessions.

The six-day course combined classroom instruction with supervised clinical practice at the Changspa facility. The collaboration with WVS taskforce was intended to update departmental staff on current protocols in anaesthesia, surgical care, patient handling and veterinary assistance, and to build skills that can be applied in routine livestock and stray animal services across Leh district.

During the training programme, 37 stray dogs were sterilized and vaccinated against rabies. In addition, three cats were sterilized, and femoral disarticulation surgery was performed on one dog.

The training forms part of department’s effort to upgrade clinical competence and support animal birth control and anti-rabies program in Leh.
