Acting CEC chairs meeting to discuss preventive measures against wild animal attacks

Kargil, June 14, 2024: Acting Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC, Kargil Kacho Mohd Feroz today chaired a meeting to address the preventive measures to protect livestock and human beings from wild animal attacks.

Councillor of Town constituency; Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP); Chief Animal Husbandry Officer; Executive Officer of Municipal Committee (MC), Kargil; Naib Tehsildar, Kargil, and Incharge Range Officer, Wildlife, among other attended the meeting.  

During the meeting, the recent attacks by brown bears and leopards on domestic animals in areas such as Goma Kargil, Umba, Khachan, Drass, and other locations were discussed in detail.

The acting CEC emphasized the importance of developing both short and long-term solutions to mitigate these incidents. He instructed the relevant departments to prioritize and implement these measures.

The Acting CEC highlighted the necessity of strengthening public awareness through social media platforms, educating the community about the preventive measures and the potential risks involved. Further, the issue of compensating the owners whose sheep were killed in these attacks was deliberated upon.

Furthermore, the Acting CEC solicited suggestions from the officials and requested them to submit a sustainable project proposal to address the issue comprehensively. He assured that a follow-up meeting would be held with Councillors from the affected areas to further discuss and refine the strategies.

During the meeting, it was also informed that the Animal Husbandry Department is actively sterilizing dogs and soon they will be marking them with collars and chips to identify the sterilized ones.

The Acting CEC asked the police department to maintain vigilance and coordinate with the Animal Husbandry Department to conduct awareness camps for the local populace.

Kacho Mohd Feroz reiterated the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the livestock and ensuring the safety of the community from wild animal threats.
