EJM College observes World Mental Health Day, stresses need to destigmatise mental healthcare

Leh, October 10: The Department of Psychology at Eliezer Joldan Memorial College (EJM College), Leh, observed World Mental Health Day with a programme centred on the theme “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voice, Real Change”, highlighting the importance of empathy, active listening and accessible mental healthcare.

Administrative Secretary, Higher Education, UT Ladakh, Bhanu Prabha, IAS, attended the event as the chief guest, while consultant psychiatrist Dr. Padma Angmo was the guest of honour. Principal, DIET, Sonam Dorjey Namgial, and EJM College Principal Professor Stanzin Yangdol were also present.

Head of the Department of Psychology, Phuntsog Tsering Wangmo, in her opening remarks, underlined the importance of creating greater awareness about mental health in educational institutions.

Dr. Padma Angmo spoke about emotional well-being and the need to address the stigma associated with seeking mental healthcare. Students also presented a skit highlighting empathy, active listening and the role of social support in dealing with mental health concerns.

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Bhanu Prabha commended the department and students for organising the programme and called for the creation of empathetic communities where mental healthcare is treated as an essential part of overall well-being.

The programme also featured a dance performance and an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing students and faculty members to engage with mental health professionals.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks and a traditional Tashispa dance performance.
