MP Mohmad Haneefa Jan Meets Home Minister Amit Shah; Raises Key Political & Developmental Issues of Ladakh

Ladakh MP Mohmad Haneefa Jan met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Wednesday and submitted a detailed memorandum outlining major political, administrative and developmental concerns of the region.

During the meeting, the MP urged the immediate convening of the High Powered Committee to review the proposal for statehood for Ladakh, Sixth Schedule safeguards, and other constitutional protections. He stressed that a timely resolution would restore public confidence.

Referring to the September 24 incident in Leh, Haneefa said the violence was unintentional and triggered by youth frustration due to unemployment and pending constitutional issues. He requested compensation, a government job for the victim’s family, and withdrawal of cases, including the release of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, to support reconciliation.

Haneefa also raised concerns over the withdrawal of financial powers from UT Ladakh, warning that routing approvals up to ₹100 crore through the Ministry would delay development during Ladakh’s short working season.

He sought strict adherence to the Ladakh Reservation Ordinance 2025, alleging violations by the University of Ladakh, and demanded clarification on its status as a full-fledged State University.

Key infrastructure demands included:

• Operationalization of civil flights at Kargil Airport and a fresh feasibility study for a new airport

• Upgradation of Kargil District Hospital and establishment of an AIIMS/PGI extension campus

• Speeding up notification of five new districts and considering Sankoo-Suru and Shakar Chiktan–Shargole as additional districts

• A one-time financial package for flood protection, desilting works, and compensation for climate-related horticulture losses

• Budget release for the sanctioned Engineering College and new Government Degree Colleges at Sankoo and Bogdang-Turtuk

He further requested strengthening of security infrastructure, including full operationalization of Kargil Traffic Police Headquarters, creation of a border battalion, and raising a new BSF battalion to address unemployment.

Home Minister Amit Shah assured a personal review of all issues and promised coordination with concerned ministries for early action. The MP expressed hope that Ladakh’s long-pending demands would be addressed promptly for the welfare and development of the region.
