New Delhi, December 4, 2025:
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for a two-day official visit to participate in the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit, marking his first trip to India since the Ukraine conflict began. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally received the Russian leader at the airport, showcasing the significance India places on its long-standing strategic partnership with Russia.
Putin was welcomed with full ceremonial honours, followed by a warm greeting from PM Modi. The two leaders later travelled together from the airport, signalling a strong political message ahead of the high-level talks scheduled at Hyderabad House.
Key Agenda of the Visit
According to official sources, the summit will focus on several critical areas of cooperation:
Defence & Strategic Partnership: Discussions are expected on ongoing defence projects and potential new deals involving advanced military systems. Trade & Energy Cooperation: With India being one of the largest buyers of Russian crude oil, both nations are likely to push for deeper cooperation in energy, trade diversification, and smoother payment mechanisms amid global sanctions on Russia. Geopolitical Developments: The leaders are also expected to exchange views on global security challenges and regional issues, as India continues to balance ties with both Russia and Western partners.
Diplomatic Significance
Putin’s visit comes at a crucial time as Russia faces global isolation due to the Ukraine conflict. For India, the summit reaffirms its policy of strategic autonomy, maintaining strong relations with all major global powers while prioritizing its national interests.
The India–Russia relationship, described as a “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership,” continues to be anchored in defence, energy, and long-term geopolitical cooperation.
What to Expect
Several agreements across defence, energy, and trade sectors are expected to be announced after formal talks on Thursday. A joint statement highlighting key outcomes of the summit is also likely.
Putin’s visit underscores the enduring strength of India–Russia ties and the importance of sustained engagement between the two nations amid rapidly evolving global dynamics.
