SC imposed 1 lakh on UT administration

KARGIL, SEPTEMBER 06 : The Supreme Court Wednesday set aside the August 5 notification issued for holding elections to the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and directed that a fresh notification be issued for this.

A bench of Justices Vikaram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullan directed that the fresh notification be issued within 7 days and also rejected the appeal filed by the Union Territory of Ladakh against the Jammu and Kashmir High Court order allotting the plough symbol to the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC).The SC also imposed a cost of Rs 1 lakh on the UT administration.

The bench, which read out only the operative portion of the verdict, said that “for these reasons, the entire election process issued by the administration by Ladakh stands set aside”. The Jammu and Kashmir High Court had on August 10 asked election authorities to allot the plough symbol to JKNC.

As per the earlier notification, the elections were scheduled to be held on September 10.

The detailed order is awaited.
