Administrative Secretary, Yatinder M. Maralkar reviews training preparations for wheat, edible oil, and milk fortification

Leh, July 11: Administrative Secretary, Foods, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, UT Ladakh Yatinder M. Maralkar chaired a meeting regarding the training on fortification of wheat, edible oil, and milk, and launch of fortified foods, scheduled to be held tomorrow for flour mills owners & employees, officials of Foods, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, FSSAI officials, and PDS officials.

A detailed presentation on fortified products, strategies for addressing micronutrient deficiencies was made by the technical partners- Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT) engaged by the Department.

The Secretary highlighted the importance of fortified wheat, edible oil, and milk keeping in mind the nutrients, iron, folic acid, and vitamin B 12, etc. and importance of all these nutrients as per FSSAI standards for attai “+F” logo on their packaging material. Maralkar also impressed upon the concerned officials to ensure quality and quantity assurance.

Fortified flour is a regular flour that contains added micronutrients to improve its nutritional quality. It contains added nutrients that may not occur naturally in the grain. This is different from enriched flour, where nutrients that are lost during wheat grain processing are added back.
The Secretary impressed upon the concerned officers to ensure the launching of fortified products and training of all officials and beneficiaries by end of July 2023.

The meeting was attended by Swaran Singh (Deputy Secretary) Foods, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Ladakh; Ruth Mary (Additional Director) Foods, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Ladakh & concerned officers of Foods, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Leh; and officials of GAIN and KHPT. Concerned officials from Kargil joined the meeting through virtual mode.
