New Delhi, December 08 :
The Centre on Monday objected before the Supreme Court to climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s request to appear through video conferencing from Jodhpur jail in connection with a petition challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA).
The Supreme Court was hearing a plea filed by Gitanjali J Angmo, wife of the Ladakhi activist, who has alleged that Wangchuk’s detention is illegal, arbitrary, and a violation of his fundamental rights.
During the hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Angmo, informed the bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria that Wangchuk wished to be connected virtually from jail and sought the court’s permission for the same.
However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, opposed the request, stating, “We will have to give the same treatment to all convicts across the country.”
Following brief submissions, the bench adjourned the matter to December 15 for further hearing.
