The Central Silk Board’s Central Sericulture Research & Training Institute (CSB–CSR&TI), Pampore, successfully conducted three Technology Demonstration Programmes today across different villages in Kargil. The initiative aimed at strengthening mulberry-based sericulture by equipping local farmers with practical knowledge and scientific techniques essential for successful plantation and early-stage maintenance.
The programmes focused on a range of crucial activities including:
Soil sampling and testing to determine suitability for mulberry cultivation Pit making techniques for healthy plant growth Raising high-quality mulberry saplings Scientific plantation methods Early-stage maintenance to ensure strong and disease-free mulberry plants
These hands-on demonstrations were organized at three villages—Kanoor, Thanzar Sa Trespone, and Pashkum—engaging 14, 34, and 17 farmers, respectively. The sessions helped participants understand field practices more effectively through real-time demonstrations and expert guidance.
The initiative reflects CSB–CSR&TI’s commitment to empowering farmers in remote regions like Kargil by introducing modern, practical approaches to mulberry cultivation. By enhancing farmers’ technical knowledge and improving plantation practices, the programme aims to boost future silk production and promote sustainable livelihood opportunities in the region.
With growing interest in sericulture across Ladakh, such training programmes are expected to play a vital role in expanding the sector and creating long-term economic benefits for rural communities.
