The Department of Biotechnology, Government Degree College (GDC) Kargil, organised a two-day hands-on training programme and workshop on Basic Plant Tissue Culture Techniques from October 23–24, 2026, under the DBT Star College Scheme. The programme aimed to familiarise students with the fundamental principles and practical applications of plant tissue culture through expert lectures and laboratory-based training.
The inaugural session was graced by the Principal of the college, Dr. Amjad Ali, as the Chief Guest. Dr. Vishal Sharma, Scientist-C, CSIR–Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), Palampur, served as the technical expert and resource person for the workshop.
The first day commenced with an interactive scientific lecture by Dr. Vishal Sharma, who introduced participants to the basic principles of plant tissue culture and highlighted its significance in plant propagation, conservation and biotechnology. In the second scientific session, he elaborated on the historical development of plant tissue culture and the evolution of nutrient media used for in vitro plant growth. The sessions were followed by hands-on training in the preparation, sterilisation and storage of culture media, providing participants with practical exposure to essential laboratory procedures.
On the second day, the programme continued with a scientific lecture on various techniques used in plant tissue culture. This was followed by practical training in explant excision techniques, involving embryos, axillary and terminal buds, cotyledons and leaves. Participants were subsequently trained in the inoculation of explants into prepared culture media under appropriate laboratory conditions. Each student had the opportunity to prepare and inoculate their own explants, making the training an engaging and interactive learning experience.
The workshop witnessed the participation of more than 35 students, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, along with faculty members. The programme provided participants with valuable practical skills and enhanced their understanding of plant tissue culture methodologies and their applications in modern biotechnology, plant propagation and research.
The event concluded with a valedictory session during which certificates were distributed to the participants. Students shared their feedback and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to gain practical knowledge from an expert in the field. The organisers acknowledged the support and encouragement of the Principal, Dr. Amjad Ali, and expressed their gratitude to the resource person, Dr. Vishal Sharma, for his valuable contribution and guidance throughout the workshop.
The programme organiser, Mr. Mohd Raza, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, GDC Kargil, expressed his gratitude to Dr. Garima Gupta, Programme Coordinator, DBT Star College Scheme, Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, for providing the necessary grants and support for organising the workshop.
The successful completion of the programme reflects the Department of Biotechnology’s continued commitment to promoting experiential learning, strengthening practical laboratory skills and encouraging scientific research among students.
