Ethnic Food & Handicrafts Festival Showcases Zanskar’s Living Heritage at GHS Karsha

Government High School Karsha, Zanskar, witnessed a vibrant celebration of culture and tradition as it hosted an Ethnic Food and Handicrafts Festival under the PM POSHAN initiative, aiming to promote local heritage, nutrition awareness, and community participation.

The festival brought together students, educators, community members, and dignitaries to celebrate the rich culinary traditions and artistic craftsmanship that define the cultural identity of the Zanskar region.

The event was formally inaugurated by I/C Sub-Divisional Magistrate Zanskar, Shri Mohd Hassan, who attended as the Chief Guest. Shri Rana Sahib, Officer Commanding, Army Camp Padum, graced the occasion as Guest of Honour, while Shri Tsering Dorjay, President ZBA Zanskar, attended as Special Guest. Several other dignitaries, officials, and respected community elders were also present.

Students of Government High School Karsha played a central role in the programme, presenting a wide array of traditional ethnic dishes, handmade crafts, and cultural artefacts, prepared and curated in collaboration with Ama Tsogspa Karsha, Youlang, and Youlsum. The exhibits reflected centuries-old knowledge systems, indigenous skills, and sustainable practices preserved within local communities.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, students and cultural troupes from Karsha, Youlang, and Youlsum presented colourful cultural performances, showcasing traditional music, dance, and folk expressions that captivated the audience.

Welcoming the guests, Headmaster Shri Rigzin Samphel highlighted various developmental and welfare schemes being implemented in the school, with special emphasis on the PM POSHAN scheme and its role in enhancing students’ nutritional well-being and overall growth.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest emphasized the importance of preserving ancestral food traditions and indigenous crafts, noting their significance in maintaining cultural identity, promoting healthy lifestyles, and passing heritage values to future generations.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the efforts of students, teachers, community groups, and supporting departments. As a gesture of appreciation, traditional khataks were presented to all participants and guests, bringing the cultural celebration to a warm and respectful close.
