International Day of Yoga celebrated across Kargil district

Civil Admin, Indian Army Jawans, School Children among others participated in the main function at Kargil HQ

Kargil, June 21, 2023: The 9th International Yoga Day-2023 with the theme “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” was celebrated today across Kargil district with enthusiasm and the main function was held at Khree Sultan Chow Sports Stadium, Bemathang, Kargil.

The International Day of Yoga is marked annually on June 21 on a global scale since 2015. To mark the day and raise awareness of the benefits of practicing yoga, yoga enthusiasts gathered early morning at the Bemathang Stadium to participate and perform yoga.

The main function was attended by Executive Councilor, Health, LAHDC, Kargil Mohsin Ali and Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC, Kargil Santosh Sukhadeve at Bemathang.

Assistant Commissioner Revenue (ACR) AG Zargar, Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD) Ghulam Muhammad, Chief Planning Officer (CPO) Kargil, Abdul Hadi, Deputy Secretary, Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (LAACL), Kargil, Nazir Hussain, Program Officer of the North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC), Patiala, Janrail Singh all district officers, staff of different departments, Army Jawans, MMA Ladakh, SIA, NYK, youth, students of different schools and other concerned officials participated in the Yoga session.

This year, the theme for Yoga Day is “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which beautifully encapsulates the collective aspiration for “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”

The program started with National Anthem followed by different Asanas.

While speaking on the occasion, EC Health, Mohsin Ali said by the endeavors of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, yoga has been recognized at the international level and it is now performed by people all over the globe.

Mohsin highlighted the importance of Yoga Day and said that it is an invaluable gift of ancient Indian tradition and yoga has emerged as one of the most trusted means to boost physical and mental well-being. He also said that the day provided an opportunity to meet with each other.

On behalf of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil the EC congratulated people on Yoga Day and thanked all the participants.

In his address, the DC Santosh Sukhadeve congratulated the participants on the IYD and said yoga has become popular and is performed across the globe.

While highlighting the importance of Yoga Day, he said it is the need of the hour to make yoga part of the daily routine for physical and mental health in this stressful world.

The Deputy Commissioner urged people especially youth to make Yoga part of life to gain both physical and mental health which is part and parcel of life. He also said that the yoga gives spirituality and mental peace.

Soon after the Yoga session was held, artists from different States and cultures of India presented colourful programs depicting the diverse and unique cultures of the country that enthralled the audience.

Ladakh Academy of Art Culture and Languages (LAACL), Kargil, Ladakh, in collaboration with North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC), Patiala Ministry of Culture, Government of India organized “Sanskritik Yatra-Sindhu Darshan Festival-2033” on the Yoga Day.

Program Officer of the North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala, Janrail Singh expressed gratitude to LAHDC Kargil, District Administration Kargil and LAACL, Kargil for giving them a chance to present different cultural programs that highlighted the rich cultural diversity of the country.

The District Administration Kargil and LAHDC Kargil had made all the arrangements at Khree Sultan Chow Sports Stadium Bemathang and other locations for the celebration of Yoga Day.

The Deputy Secretary, LAACL, Kargil, Nazir Hussain presented vote of thanks. He thanked EC Mohisn, DC Kargil, all district officers, participants, local and non-local folk artists for making the program colourful.

He also all thanked all the concerned departments like Health, Police, Education, Information, Youth Services and Sports and other departments for their arrangements and endeavors in making the event successful. The program proceedings were conducted by Ibrahim Shaoqi and Sanjeev Shad.

International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21 every year to celebrate the physical and spiritual prowess that yoga has brought to the world.

Meanwhile, Yoga Day was observed at Sub-Division Drass where all the Block Officers as well as students of different schools took active part. The yoga instructor Mohd Hassan gave demonstrations on different yoga Asanas and threw light on the essence and importance of yoga in the daily lives.

The program started with the National Anthem followed by different Asanas. The Department of Youth Services and Sports, Drass thanked all the departments for active participation and making the event successful.

Yoga Day was also celebrated at Health & Wellness Centre, Khawous where Tehsildar, BDO, HBDC, NT, PRI members of Tehsil Taisuru and school children participated.

The idea of the Yoga Day was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014, during his speech at the UN General Assembly, where a resolution to establish June 21 as International Yoga Day was introduced.

The date of June 21 was chosen as it is the Summer Solstice, the day where there is the most sun out of every other day of the year.
