Leh, October 3: Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena interacted with nearly 200 Nambardars (village heads) from different villages of Ladakh at Lok Niwas, in the first of a series of interactions aimed at strengthening the relationship between the UT Administration and grassroots representatives.
Saxena said regular interactions with Nambardars would help the Administration understand local conditions, identify developmental needs and address public grievances. He described Nambardars as an important link between the Administration and people, given their close connection with village communities.
During the interaction, Nambardars raised concerns over an acute water crisis in dozens of villages and sought the Lieutenant Governor’s intervention. Saxena assured them that their concerns would be addressed on priority.
President of the All Ladakh Goba Association, Nawang Tsering, expressed gratitude to the L-G for enhancing the monthly emoluments of Nambardars from ₹1,500 to ₹5,000. The increase benefits 247 Nambardars across Ladakh.
The L-G said Nambardars’ inputs were valuable in identifying gaps in public service delivery and prioritising interventions related to water availability, land protection, environmental conservation, employment and livelihoods.
He recalled that suggestions received from Nambardars during his visits to different parts of Ladakh had contributed to initiatives including Him Sarovar, rock check dams, measures to reverse land degradation and diversion of untapped glacier streams.
Saxena assured the Nambardars of continued support and said Lok Niwas would remain open to them to raise issues concerning their communities and seek appropriate administrative intervention.
