Leh, December 5:

Ladakh is on track to emerge as India’s Sea Buckthorn Capital owing to its vast natural reserves, favourable high-altitude climate, and its position as the country’s largest sea buckthorn–growing region. This was stated by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, after inaugurating the Centre of Excellence for Sea Buckthorn at Nimoo today.
Terming the Centre a major step in boosting Ladakh’s rural economy, the LG said it represents a transformative leap in scientific farming, processing, and organised value-chain development. The initiative aims to empower farmers, modernise agriculture practices, and position Ladakh as a national leader in sea buckthorn innovation in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for the region.
Addressing Challenges in Production
While Ladakh accounts for nearly 64% of India’s sea buckthorn cultivation area, the LG highlighted that actual production remains significantly low due to traditional and irregular harvesting methods, and the absence of structured processing facilities.
The newly inaugurated Centre of Excellence has been established to overcome these challenges through:
Advanced scientific research Modern training and capacity-building Improved value-chain systems Support for farmers and local entrepreneurs
Centre to Create New Opportunities for Youth and Farmers
The Lieutenant Governor stressed that the Centre will serve not only as a research hub but also as a comprehensive platform for farmers, FPOs, SHGs, women entrepreneurs, and youth. It will help them upgrade skills, adopt scientific methods, and explore new income-generating opportunities.
He encouraged Ladakh’s youth to become job creators rather than job seekers, emphasising their role in driving rural economic growth.
Unlocking High-Value Product Potential
The LG further stated that the initiative will significantly enhance production quality, ensure climate-resilient agriculture, and open avenues for high-value product development, including:
Juices and oils Nutraceuticals Cosmetics Herbal medicines
The Centre is expected to place Ladakh at the forefront of India’s expanding sea buckthorn industry and contribute meaningfully to the region’s socio-economic developments.
