Leh Joins in Celebrating National Sports Day with Zeal various games were played to commemorate the hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand 

 

Leh, August 29: The Department of Youth Services and Sports, UT Ladakh organized National Sports Day at Open Astroturf Stadium, Spituk, Leh. National Sports Day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand and the day is also dedicated to the nation’s sports heroes and champions, honoring their contribution and dedication to bringing laurels to the country.

 

The event saw the participation of 15 schools, fostering a spirit of competition and sportsmanship in various games such as futsal, Table Tennis, Traditional Archery, Tag of War, Pencaksilat, 4×100-meter mixed relay race, and 200m race for Under-17 both boys and girls.

 

Secretary to Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of UT Ladakh/Secretary of Youth Services and Sports Ravinder Kumar witnessed various games being played highlighting his interest and involvement in promoting sports and youth activities in the region.

 

Additionally, his inspection of the ongoing construction of the Astroturf Stadium shows his dedication to ensuring that the infrastructure development projects are progressing as planned. By instructing the concerned department to complete the work within the stipulated time, the Secretary emphasized the importance of timely execution and efficient project management.

In the U-17 Girls category of Table Tennis, the final match took place between Moravian Mission School Leh and Govt High School, Housing Colony. Moravian Mission School emerged as the winner, while Govt. High School, Housing Colony emerged as the runner-up.

 

In the U-17 Boys category, the final match was played between Boys Higher Secondary School, Leh, and Islamia Public School, Leh in which Boys High Secondary School Leh emerged as the winner and Islamia Public School was the runner-up.

Govt. High School, Housing Colony won the gold medal, Delhi Public School, Leh won the silver medal, and Islamia Public School, Leh won the bronze medal in the U-17 4×100-meter mixed relay race.

 

In the U-17 Girls 200-meter race, Moravian Public School won the gold medal, Islamia Public School, Leh won the silver medal, and Govt. High School, Khanakling, Leh won the bronze medal. While, in the U-17 Boys 200-meter race, Islamia Public School, Leh won the gold medal, Moravian Public School, Leh won the silver medal, while Govt. Boys Higher Secondary School, Leh won the bronze medal.

 

In the futsal, the Grey Team emerged as the winner while the Green Team was the runner-up. In Traditional Archery, Team A emerged as the winner, and Team B was the runner-up of the game. In the game of Tag of War played between students and the Spouse team, the spouse team emerged as the winner while the students’ team was the runner-up in the game.

 

Director of the Department of Youth Services and Sports, UT Ladakh, Moses Kunzang graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He congratulated all the participants for their remarkable efforts and dedication, highlighting the commitment of the UT Administration and Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh to enhance sports infrastructure within UT Ladakh.

 

Moses Kunzang passionately encouraged students to actively participate in both national and international level sports competitions, fostering a culture of excellence and sportsmanship. Promoting sports and providing proper sports facilities not only fosters a culture of physical activity and healthy competition but also contributes to the overall development and well-being of the youth in the region, he stated.

 

Youth Services and Sports Officer, Leh, Tsering Tashi commenced the event with a warm welcome speech, commending all participants for their dedication and hard work.

 

The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, where deserving participants were honored for their exceptional performances in various games.
