Nubra Sports and Adventure Festival commences at Turtuk with colourful celebrations

Leh, Oct 19: Deputy Chairman, LAHDC Leh, Tsering Angchuk inaugurated the Nubra Sports and Adventure Festival at Turtuk organised by LAHDC Leh and Department of Youth Services and Sports, Leh.

Executive Councillor, Ghulam Mehdi; Councillor Hunder, Kunzang Lotus; Chairpersons Block Development Council, Turtuk and Diskit; Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Nubra; Tehsildar Turtuk; Block Development Officer, Turtuk and army officers from 3rd Ladakh Scouts, Colonel Ajay Patel and 12 Garwal, Colonel Yashvardhan Kumar and concerned departmental officer/officials were also present during the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, chief guest Dy Chairman, Tsering Angchuk added that a festival dedicated to sports and adventure would further promote tourism in the Nubra region. He shared that the traditional sport of horse-polo, which is an integral cultural identity of Ladakh, is dwindling and is currently practiced/played only in few pockets of the region like Turtuk, Chuchot and Drass.

Dy Chairman exhorted the need of preserving and promoting the traditional sport and assured the continuous support of Council for the same purpose. He added that Council would extend financial support for purchasing equipment, providing trainings and workshops.

During the inaugural ceremony, a polo match between Indus Club Chuchot and Balti Tiger Turtuk was played.

Artists from Turtuk village presented beautiful Balti dance on the occasion.
