Two-day Ladakh Education Fair held at GDC Nobra

Leh, August 20: The First ever Ladakh Education Fair 2022 organized by the Higher Education Department in collaboration with the University of Ladakh and Ladakh Skill Development Mission also kicked off at Govt. Degree College Nubra.

The idea of organising the Ladakh Education Fair- 2022 was conceived by Commissioner/ Secretary, Padma Angmo, Higher Education, UT Ladakh and was conducted at all the constituent colleges of University of Ladakh.

The aim is to educate and create awareness amongst the people in general and students in particular about Choice of subjects, career guidance, skills, apprenticeship and scholarships.

The event was formally launched virtually by the Lieutenant Governor of UT Ladakh, R K Mathur today on August.

LG urged the youths of Ladakh to make full use of the two day Ladakh Education Festival by participating in it in huge numbers.

Further, Secretary Higher Education UT Ladakh, Padma Angmo and Former Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh, C Phuntsog shared their valuable knowledge with the audience via virtual medium as well.

Deputy Chairman LAHDC Leh, Tsering Angchuk was the chief guest during the opening ceremony while Executive Councilor, LAHDC Leh, Ghulam Mehdi was the guest of the honour.

Besides, Major Ajay Patel, Commanding Officer of the 3rd Battalion of the Ladakh Scouts was also present as a special guest. The event was attended by the HoDs of different departments of Nobra sub-division, students and staff members of the different Higher Secondary Schools of Nubra, parents of the students, and heads of the various religio-socio political leaders of Nubra valley.

Dr. Tsewang Mutup, Principal welcomed the guests. He briefed about the aims and objectives of the ‘Ladakh Education Fair-2022’.

Deputy Chairman of LAHDC-Leh, Tsering Angchuk has highly appreciated the effort put forward by the principal and staff members of the college for organising first ever education fair. He was also pleased to see resource person from different fields and backgrounds. He also expressed his sincere gratitude to UT administration for taking such initiative and stressed on continuing such events in future as well.

Executive Councillor, Ghulam Mehdi, LAHDC, Leh lauded the organisers for initiating such events despite having limited resources.

Col. Ajay Patial SM, Commanding Officer, 3rd battalion Ladakh Scouts gave a presentation on ‘Armed Forces as a career option’. He stressed about how one must be passionate about their career, goals.

Inspector Stanzin Dorjay, SHO P/S Nubra gave a detail presentation regarding how one can opt police force as a career. He also spoke about different entry level in the police force.

Furthermore, Urgian Rigzin Onpo/historian from Nubra spoke about preserving the distinct identity of our dialect, culture and traditional form of astrology. He advised the audience to take great interest in studying local history as well as astrology.

Similarly, in the second technical session, Dr.Kunzes Dolma, gynecologist spoke on the topic ‘Emerging Trends in Medical Science’.

While, Zulikha Bano, Advocate spoke about women empowerment. She stressed on studying law, especially for girls’ students in order to empower themselves.

Jigmat Gyalson, a leading entrepreneur from Nobra valley gave a presentation on ‘Harvesting wild fruits and their economic values’. He shared an interesting and inspiring story about how he ventured into this field with many ups and downs. Also, encouraged students to venture into such fields with passion and hard work.

Ilyaz Khan, singer shared his experiences as an artist from a remote part of Ladakh and performed some popular songs to the audience.

The second day of the Ladakh Education Fair continues with the technical session on ‘Scholarships and Students Loans’, where, Prof. Ajeet Angral(via-video conferencing), Dr Jigmet Ladol, Asst. Prof., Tsewang Lhamo, Asst. Prof. spoke about the various scholarship schemes.

Lydia Sonam, Asst. Manager JK Bank has shared her knowledge related to ‘Career opportunities in banking sector’.

In the second technical session entitled, ‘Entrepreneurship’, various budding entrepreneurs from Nubra valley shared their interesting and inspiring stories with the audience.

Jigmet Mingyur, a Chef, who is prominently known for his innovation and experimenting with the blending of modern and traditional cuisine of Ladakh urged the youth of Ladakh to make career in hotel service sector. While, Rigzin Norboo, founder of The Himalayan Chocolate, spoke about challenges being faced by the young entrepreneurs initially.

Sonam Tokdan, hairstylist from Nubra (Melong Unisex Salon) also talked about various social challenges and stigma associated with professions like hairstylist.

Tsetan Dorjay, a soup maker from Nubra (Siachen Natural), spoke on the value addition in local products and marketing strategies.

The last speaker, Stanzin Paljor, a snacks manufacturer from Nubra (Ladakh Bites Chips) talked about local entrepreneurship and challenges for local entrepreneurs.

The closing ceremony was graced by Brigadier Padam Dev Thakur, VSM, Commander Siachen Brigade as the chief guest and Col. Ajay Patial, SM, Commanding Officer, 3rd battalion Ladakh Scouts as the guest of honour.

While interacting with the students, Brigadier Padam stressed about having a clear aim and objective in students’ life.

Expressing his confidence, he said that this education fair would surely benefit the students by clearing many doubts. He also assured full support from the army in organizing such events in future as well. The whole event was conducted with the full support 3rd battalion Ladakh Scouts and the Siachen Brigade.
