Visit of Director Sheep Husbandry, UT Ladakh to Director Sheep Husbandry, Kashmir

The Director Sheep Husbandry, Union Territory of Ladakh, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain, paid a courtesy visit to the Director Sheep Husbandry, Kashmir, Dr. Bashrat Amin Khuthu.

During the meeting, detailed discussions were held regarding the Kashmir Merino crossbreeding programme being implemented in Kashmir, as well as the Merino crossbreeding programme being undertaken in Ladakh. The two sides discussed in detail the performance and success of Merino crossbred sheep in both Kashmir and Ladakh.

It was highlighted that Merino is a dual-purpose breed, known for its desirable characteristics for both quality wool production and mutton production, making it an important breed for improving the productivity of the sheep sector.

In this regard, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain requested the Director Sheep Husbandry, Kashmir, to provide at least four purebred Merino rams to the Union Territory of Ladakh to strengthen and improve the ongoing Merino crossbreeding programme.

The Director Sheep Husbandry, Kashmir, agreed in principle to provide the required number of purebred Merino rams to Ladakh, subject to the necessary departmental formalities.

The proposed exchange is expected to further strengthen cooperation between the two departments and contribute towards the genetic improvement and productivity of sheep in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
