CEC Attends field day on melon crops at KVK-1 Kargil
Kargil, August 08, 2024: Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon today attended a field day on melon crops at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kargil-1.
During the visit, the CEC was briefed about the variety of melons produced at KVK and toured the seed production units of newly introduced kale and Swiss chard lines under the DST project.
He emphasized the importance of reviving mulberry cultivation and developing techniques to grow strawberries, citing their high nutritional value.
Dr Akhoon highlighted the important role of agriculture in sustainable growth and the local economy, urging the adoption of sustainable agricultural and horticultural practices to provide employment opportunities for the youth.
In his address, the CEC asked to share the achievements of Zanskar KVK with his office. He noted the high prevalence of anaemia among lactating mothers in Kargil to which he said that organic farming and products could significantly address this issue.
Dr Akhoon also lauded local entrepreneurs producing mushroom spawn. A request was made to provide a BOD incubator under a subsidy component for beneficiaries to which the CEC assured to provide three machines on a subsidy basis.
Chief Scientist KVK-1, Dr. Mehdi, also spoke on the occasion, detailing the department’s achievements and initiatives. The event was attended by the Executive Councillor, LAHDC, Kargil for Agriculture; Councillor Chiktan; Chief Agriculture Officer Kargil; senior and junior scientists from KVK-1, former President of Baseej-e-Zaraat, other officials, and progressive farmers.
