CEC Kargil Attends Losar-e-RGaston Poetic Symposium, Releases Book by Young Purgi Writer

Kargil, December 15, 2025:

The Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon today attended the Losar-e-RGaston Poetic Symposium of Purgi poets, along with the book release ceremony of β€œChronicles of the Last Village” authored by young writer Ali Asgar Balti. The literary event was organized by the Purgi Culture and Literary Society (PCLS), Kargil.

The programme witnessed the presence of several eminent personalities, including Padma Shri awardee Akhoon Asgar Basharat, Special Officer (Culture) and Assistant Director Tourism, Kargil, Mr. Mohammad Ali Tak, besides noted writers, poets, scholars, and literary figures representing Shina, Balti, Purgi, and Brokskat languages.

Addressing the gathering, the CEC congratulated Ali Asgar Balti on the publication of his second book and lauded the Purgi Culture and Literary Society for successfully organizing the symposium. Praising the young author, Dr. Akhoon highlighted his remarkable literary achievements at a young age and described him as a source of inspiration for students aspiring to pursue careers in literature and creative writing.

Dr. Akhoon further emphasized the vital role played by literary organizations in preserving regional languages and promoting cultural heritage. He termed writers and poets as the torch-bearers of society, stating that their writings reflect social realities, encourage introspection, and guide society towards progress and positive change.

Recalling the contribution of literary communities in Kargil, the CEC highlighted their significant role in securing official language status for Purgi in the Union Territory of Ladakh, calling it a landmark achievement for cultural recognition.

Responding to certain demands raised during the event, Dr. Akhoon informed that the Culture Academy, Kargil, will be strengthened through additional staff via contractual appointments or outsourcing. He added that recruitment rules for permanent staff are currently under process. The CEC also assured that funds will be earmarked under the upcoming CAPEX budget to support writers, poets, and scholars in publishing their literary works.

The symposium concluded on a note of optimism, reaffirming the commitment of the administration and literary bodies towards the promotion of language, literature, and cultural identity in Ladakh.
