EC Tashi visits makeshift Ice Hockey Rink at Titichumik

Applauds villagers for promoting winter sports

KARGIL, FEBRUARY 12, 2022: Executive Councillor, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Er. Phunsok Tashi today visited the traditional water reservoir/Ice Hockey rink at Titichumik village and applauded the villagers for promoting winters sports.

Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD) Kargil, Ghulam Muhammad, District Youth Services and Sports Officer (DYSSO) Kargil, Muhammad Hussain Rehnuma besides other concerned officers accompanied EC during the visit.

During the visit, EC was informed by the Village Welfare Committee that the property was constructed by the Youth Services and Sports Department in collaboration with the Rural Development Department (RDD) as a convergence project, which is used as water tank irrigation purpose in summer and in winter it is used as Ice Hockey Rink.

The villagers requested that the current area of the rink is not sufficient and needs extension and public convenience also needs to be established.

EC Tashi congratulated the villagers for conducting winter sports activities in Titichumik and directed the concerned officers to add extension works under the District Capex budget.

He said that in the past two years winter sports is getting popular and athletes have displayed their sporting skills at various national events and brought laurels not only to Kargil but for the entire Ladakh region.

Tashi said that necessary infrastructure for the promotion of winter sports at the block level is undergoing through various schemes and departments like DYSSO and RDD to strengthen it at the grass root level.

EC advised the players to take maximum benefits under sports through subsidy component and under the concerned departments.

ACD Kargil, Ghulam Muhammad said that there is urgent need of an extension of infrastructure to enable winter sports activities in Kargil.

He said in this regard, RDD along with concerned departments is making all efforts to establish full-fledged and makeshift ice hockey rinks in various blocks of the district.

DYSSO Kargil, Muhammad Hussain Rehnuma said apart from Drass, Chiktan and Shargole, winter sports activity particularly ice hockey is getting popular in Kargil and other blocks adding that winter sports will be further strengthened in coming years.

In order to promote winter sports in rural areas, the RDD through various schemes in collaboration with Youth Services and Sports constructed and converted some 24 water reservoir tanks into Ice Skating Rinks in various blocks of Kargil in the past two years.
