Historic Milestone : UPSC Exams Held in Kargil for the First Time

Kargil, June 16: Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducted its Civil Services Preliminary Examination in Kargil for the first time today.

This step comes after the introduction of a UPSC exam centre in Leh in 2021, marking a new chapter in the accessibility of these prestigious exams for candidates from Kargil and nearby areas.

The examination took place at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Kargil, with a total of 188 candidates having chosen this center. Out of these, 77 candidates appeared for the exam. This move has been widely welcomed by local students , who have long advocated for a local examination centre to reduce the burden of travel and associated costs.

The Deputy Commissioner of Kargil, Shrikant Balsaheb Suse expressed satisfaction with the arrangements and the turnout, stating, “We are happy that the demand of our children for a UPSC exam centre in Kargil has been met. This marks an important step towards providing equal opportunities to our youth.”

In preparation for the examination, stringent measures were implemented to ensure a smooth and fair process. Security was heightened, traffic around the examination centre was managed, and essential facilities such as drinking water and toilets were provided. To maintain the integrity of the exam, mobile jammers were deployed to prevent any electronic malpractice.

Two senior officers from the UPSC were present to oversee the arrangements and ensure that the exam was conducted according to the Commission’s guidelines. Further, the General Administration of Ladakh deployed a senior officer from the Kashmir Administrative Service (KAS) as an observer to monitor the proceedings.

The introduction of the UPSC exam centre in Kargil is expected to be a game-changer for local aspirants, making it more convenient for them to pursue their ambitions in the civil services. Going forward, all examinations conducted by the UPSC will be held at this center, furthermore, integrating Kargil into the national framework of civil service examinations.
