International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2023 observed in Kargil

Speakers emphasised on harmful effects of drugs and resolved to make Kargil a drug free District

Kargil, June 26, 2023: The District Administration Kargil in collaboration with Ladakh Academy of Art Culture and Language (LAACL), Kargil today observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking-2023 at Auditorium Hall, Kargil.

During the event, all the participants united to raise awareness about the devastating consequences of drug abuse and the need to combat illicit trafficking.

Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC, Kargil, Santosh Sukhadeve was the chief guest while Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kargil, Anayat Ali Chowdhury, was the guest of honour on the occasion. The special guests include Chief Planning Officer (CPO) Kargil, Deputy Secretary, LAACL Kargil, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Chief Education Officer (CEO) Assistant Director FCS&CA besides other officials, students of GDC Kargil, , students of different schools and youth participated in the event.

The event highlighted the commitment of the District Administration Kargil and the Ladakh Academy of Arts and Culture in safeguarding the community from drug menace.

The Deputy Commissioner in his address appreciated the collaborative efforts of the District Administration Kargil and the LAACL Kargil for organizing such a significant event.

He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach involving all segments of society to effectively combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

DC Santosh emphasized the ways to stop drug addiction and its trafficking. He said the young generation need to focus on their studies and should take part in sports activities to achieve greater heights in their career.

He advised the youth to contribute in eradicating drug addiction and also its trade across the country adding that drug abuse and its dealing are illegal in every aspect and is prohibited by every religion.

DC Kargil said the stigma and discrimination associated with drug use can harm people’s physical and mental health thereby making the person unsuitable for a peaceful society.

The SSP Kargil in his speech talked about the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act that prohibits a person from production/manufacturing/cultivation, possession, sale, purchasing, transport, storage, and/or consumption of any narcotic drug or psychotropic substance.

He highlighted the importance of community involvement and called upon the citizens to remain vigilant in the fight against drugs.

The SSP Kargil said the most important part of life is school and college and youth should understand their responsibilities and remain away from drug abuse.

He said drug addiction affects the soundness of mind and influences youth in decision-making. He said family, friend circle, schools, hostel, colleges etc. play important role in manufacturing the character of a person. The SSP advised the young generation to be responsible in these stages so that the future becomes bright.

The active involvement of students from various schools across the district in the program was an encouraging sign. Their participation showed the future generation’s determination to create a drug-free society and their commitment to the well-being of their peers and community.

The commemoration program consisted of a series of impactful activities, including educational presentations, plays and thought-provoking poems and paper presentation by girl students.

These initiatives aimed to enlighten attendees about the adverse effects of drug abuse on individuals, families, and society at large. The event also emphasized the significance of prevention, early intervention, and rehabilitation in curbing the spread of substance abuse.

The event concluded with a resounding commitment by all the participants to work collectively in eradicating drug abuse in the region.

The District Administration Kargil and the Ladakh Academy of Arts and Culture pledged to continue their efforts by implementing robust awareness campaigns, providing support to individuals struggling with addiction and fostering a culture of prevention.

While presenting vote of thanks, AD, FCS&CA, said the District Administration Kargil and the Ladakh Academy of Arts and Culture are determined to make lasting changes in the fight against drug abuse. He said together they aspire to build a resilient society that prioritizes the health and well-being of its citizens.

Meanwhile, the day was also observed in all the Sub Divisions in Kargil besides that pledge taking ceremonies against drug addiction were also held across the schools.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed annually on June 26. This year’s theme is “People First: stop stigma and Discrimination, strengthen Prevention.”
