International Day for Biological Diversity: Ladakh Biodiversity Council organizes Bioresource Exhibition-cum-Competition
Kargil, May 22, 2024: The Ladakh Biodiversity Council, in collaboration with Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment today organized a Bioresource Exhibition cum Competition on International Day for Biological Diversity at Rgyal Khatoon Forest Park in Kargil.
The event was graced by Sajjad Hussain Mufti, CCF/Regional Wildlife Warden as chief guest and the Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Shrikant Suse was the special guest. Other dignitaries present included Assistant Director DIPR Kargil, Murtaza Ali; Principal GDC Drass, Dr. Amjed Abassi; Zonal Officer of Soil and Water Conservation, Mohd Lateef; District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Dr. Niyaz-ul-Hasnain; General Manager Industries/Assistant Director Tourism Kargil , Rahmatullah Bhat, DFO Mohd Ali; Wildlife Warden Raza Ali, and other officers.
Sajjad Hussain Mufti, CCF/Regional Wildlife Warden, emphasized the significance of conserving biodiversity in Ladakh. He highlighted the department’s initiatives, including the formation of 195 Biodiversity Municipal Communities (BMCs) in various Panchayats.
He urged the district administration to extend cooperation and support for the upcoming People Biodiversity Research (PBR) aimed at discovering the diverse flora and fauna of different regions in Ladakh.
Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Shrikant Suse congratulated all participants and expressed gratitude for being part of the program. He encouraged participants to raise awareness about biodiversity and indigenous bio-resources found in Kargil. The administration pledged support to enhance the economic value of indigenous food derived from local flora and fauna.
The initiative aims to raise awareness about Kargil’s rich biodiversity and underscores the importance of conserving and sustainably utilizing its natural resources . The event showcased a diverse range of cultural foods, traditional attire, agricultural practices, and indigenous tools used in ancient periods in Kargil region by different BMCs from various parts of the district.
“We are thrilled to host this event, providing a platform to showcase Ladakh’s unique biodiversity and promote its conservation,” said Mufti Sajjad Hussain, CCF/Regional Wildlife Warden.
“Through interactive exhibits and educational activities, we hope to inspire local communities and visitors to appreciate our efforts to conserve Ladakh Biodiversity,” he said.
The Bioresource Exhibition also featured a Bioresource Competition among different BMCs, with rewards presented by Department of Forest, Ecology, and Environment for the best and most innovative showcases.
The participating panchayats were Minjee, Kanoor, Holiyal, Bodh Kharbu and Darchiks.
