Kargil Campus, UoL kick-starts 3-day training program on disaster risk reduction tools

Kargil, June 15, 2023: Kargil Campus, University of Ladakh in collaboration with National Institute of Disaster Management, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, today kick-started three-day regional training program on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) tools, planning and strategies.

Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC, Kargil Santosh Sukhadeve, who is also the chairman of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), was present as chief guest, besides Director Kargil Campus, University of Ladakh, Kaneez Fatima, Prof. Anil Kumar Gupta Head of Division, Environment and Climate and Disaster Risk Management NIDM, New Delhi, Prof. Pervez Ahmad, HOD Geography and Disaster Management, University of Kashmir, Fatima Amin Scholar NIDM, participants, faculty members were present on the first day of the three-day training program.

Speaking on the occasion, DC Santosh congratulated NIDM and Kargil Campus for organizing the training program to aware people of disaster risk management and mitigation.

DC Kargil stressed to have a proper disaster management plan to be safe and secure during disasters. He said such plans can only be charted out with the collaborative efforts of society along with the administration.

The Deputy Commissioner said climate change is visible everywhere due to which Kargil has witnessed sudden flash floods regularly, which is an alarming sign for everyone to be cautious and be responsible about the fragile ecosystem.

DC Kargil hoped that with the help of this program, participants will know disaster risk management and will also be able to spread awareness among other people in society.

DC Santosh also said that there are many volunteers who have been trained through Apada Mitra and in future also many more volunteers will be trained.

DC Kargil also stressed on responsible tourism along with sustainable development adding, β€œThe future generation should not suffer from our irresponsibility.”

Extending over all support from the District Administration Kargil, DC Santosh said the District Administration is always ready to extend all ought to support for such programs.

Prof. Anil Kumar Gupta Head of Division, Environment and Climate and Disaster Risk Management, NIDM, New Delhi stressed on the localization of disaster management plans.

He said there should be a separate plan in every village, town, city and district level disaster management plans. Prof. Gupta also suggested creating disaster management centers in both districts of Ladakh.

He also requested participants to spread their knowledge of disaster management in their respective social circles and also requested them to be volunteers of Apada Mitra.

Earlier, the Director Kargil Campus, University of Ladakh, Kaneez Fatima in her welcome speech thanked the National Institute of Disaster Management, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, for collaborating with the University for holding the training program.

She also expressed gratitude to Deputy Commissioner Kargil for attending the inaugural session of the three-day training session. While expressing her optimism, she said the training program will provide benefits to participants regarding disaster risk management.
